Eating Out / In

Our local pub, the Red Hart at Awre, about three miles away, serves good food Tue-Sat lunch & dinner and Sunday lunch (booking advisable Friday or Saturday night and Sunday lunch 01594 510220) and has a choice of well kept real ales.
The Cock at Blakeney, 1.5 miles away is also a good place to eat (01594 510239).

For a slightly smarter, more modern ambience and fabulous food we thoroughly recommend The Ugly Duckling in Lydney (01594 844210).

The George Inn (01594 530228) at St Briavels, situated next to the old castle (now a Youth Hostel) is great for lunch, eating out on a summer day or in front of a roaring fire on chilly winter evenings.

The Butchers Arms (01594 834313) at Clearwell is another picturesque pub with good food worth trying and also at Clearwell is the Wyndham Arms Hotel (01594 833666) which has an excellent restaurant for more formal occasions.

Nearby at Newland The Ostrich Inn (01594 833260) welcomes dogs and children, and serves delicious food every night including Sunday.

There are another half dozen or so other good pubs, an award winning bistro in the Forest and a little further afield several outstanding restaurants.

If you prefer to stay in, our local professional chef Sue will cook a wide range of delicious meals using local and mainly organic ingredients and bring these to your door.

Activities

Several nearby golf courses include the prestigious St Pierre at Chepstow, two at Coleford, a friendly 9-hole nearby at Lydney and we have a special 'half-price' green fee arrangement with Monmouth Golf Club, "A true test of golf in idyllic surroundings", only 25 minutes away.

For anglers there are well stocked local lakes plus fishing on the Wye. Lydney boasts a new sports centre with a good swimming pool. The Forest has been ranked best in the UK for cycling (seeObserver article) : bring your own bike or hire one at Pedalabikeaway.

Try your hand on the 4x4 off-road course or at quad bike racing. Rock climbing, abseiling, paintballing, caving or canoeing on the Wye are other local activity sports. If you enjoy horse racing then Chepstow and Cheltenham are a short drive away.

For something completely different why not spend a relaxed day walking in the Forest accompanied by Llamas who will carry all your belongings and possibly a very special picnic to enjoy in a leafy glade. VisitSevernWye Llama Trekking for more details.
